May 2019

May 23, 2019

Dear School Community:

Memorial Day provides an important opportunity to thank, pay remembrance, and honor the men and women who served in the US military and sacrificed their lives to protect our freedoms.  I hope that amidst long-weekend barbeques and pre-summer fun you take some time to discuss the purpose of Memorial Day with your children in age appropriate ways.

As part of this conversation, be sure to tune into Channel 12 this weekend where Brearley Junior Michael Naya will be featured.  For the past two years, he has been interviewing veterans to discuss their wartime experiences and their lives before and after service. Michael’s voluntary work reflects both his love of history and his deep appreciation for those who serve to protect our freedoms.

In unrelated news, I’d like to use this correspondence to provide you with some school district updates and information.

  • Budget Update

    • At its April 29, 2019 meeting, the Kenilworth Board of Education held its annual budget hearing and had its final budget adoption for next school year. Exciting budget highlights aimed at enhancing teaching and learning, technology, professional development, and student achievement are included in a high-level synopsis that may be accessed here.

  • Substitutes Needed

    • The Kenilworth Schools are looking for community members to increase our pool of substitute teachers for the 2019-2020 school year.  What’s better than working in your own backyard?  For more information, or to express interest, please email Ms. Lisa Casamento at Lisa_Casamento@kenilworthschools.com.

  • Potential Restoration of Tuition-less Preschool for School Year 19-20

    • As the district assesses community interest in the possibility of offering free preschool for our district’s four-year-olds next year, I am asking you share this letter with Kenilworth friends and family members who may be interested.

  • The Brearley PTO Needs You!

    • Leadership posts for DBMHS’s General Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) are available for next school-year.  The group is looking for a few good men and women to help continue the organization’s support of our students.  Their work is critical in offering support and leadership to our schools.  Please consider stepping up.  You can find more information here.

  • PTO Tricky Tray

    • DBMHS’s Tricky Tray will be held on June 1st.  I’ve compelled the PTO to allow me to be the guest “caller” for a few tricky tray rounds.  So, I hope to see you there. More information may be found via this link.

  • Harding PTO

    • It’s time to sign up as a room parent for next year.  Interested individuals should complete the Google Form on the Harding PTO Facebook page or come to the group’s June meeting scheduled for June 12 at 7:00pm in the All Purpose Room.

  • School Closing

    • As a gentle reminder, school will be closed tomorrow, Friday, May 24, 2019 to give back the one remaining snow day from the 2018-2019 school calendar.  Schools reopen on Tuesday, May 28.

Have a great holiday weekend!  Don’t forget to fly your flag at half-staff from sunrise until noon on Monday!

Sincerely,

Kyle C. Arlington
