Through proceeds funded by a grant from Merck, Harding School students in 6th grade participated in the Students 2 Science (S2S) Virtual Laboratory (V-Lab) “The Polymer Mystery”.

The students investigated the concept of density by creating a density bottle using a combination of salt solution and isopropanol.  By dropping polymers into the bottles, their experiments demonstrated the relative densities of two immiscible liquids and helped to identify the difference in density between three unknown polymers.

The V-Lab program uses video conferencing to enable students in their classrooms and the S2S Technology Center to conduct simultaneously hands-on science experiments. S2S scientists demonstrate and describe how the scientific techniques and learning principles are used in real world applications.

S2S, in partnership with Connectivity, Inc., and in collaboration with the American Chemical Society, is a fully interactive, web-based, hybrid, distance-learning program to provide science experiments to support the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and the opportunity to teach rigorous science content.
